How to Wear Bare Feet in the Ecuador Cloud Forest

L
Today I took a walk in the Cloud Forest near Mindo. It's a private forest called Mindo Lindo where a reforestation project has been underway. It's always damp on the forest floor. I went barefoot though I did wonder about deadly snakes and spiders. It felt incredible to be in such a lush and natural environment. #barefootintheforest #mymindocamino #nature #motherearth #howtowearbarefeet #lookup #trees.

Camino Documentary - Las Peregrinas...the women who walk Camino document...

They say that your journey begins when you commit to go on the Camino. Congratulations to all of those who made that commitment this past weekend as it takes courage. I look forward to walking with all of you. Here's a clip from a documentary film we did quite a few years ago, Las Peregrinas 2006. You might recognize Mony Dojeiji and her wise words in the opening of this clip. Mony was an integral part of the making of this film and offered so much wisdom to the pilgrims in our group. It seems like a lifetime ago that we made this film with Bruce Pirrie. 10 years later we are both still doing our life work focussed on the Camino, pilgrimage and peace. How perfect life is. Feel Good Fast Day 2-4 Nourishing Food and Barefooting

The Great Mother Earth feeds us, waters us, houses us, clothes us, gives us wisdom and nourishes our heart and soul. I try to spend as much time as I can outside in my barefeet to stay connected to her as much as possible.

Everything that goes into my mouth, nourishes my body and has a direct impact on the environment body too. I believe that some of my nourishment  comes from walking and running barefoot in the forest. The earth grounds me, the minerals in the mud feed me and the water or snow (as you see in this pic) hydrates me. After I've been in the forest for about an hour, I am filled with joy and on a natural high for about 24 hours. My appetite diminishes naturally. It's magic!

One of the things I love about this is how Moira suggests we make a bit extra so there are leftovers the next day. That's the way my Mum taught me to cook and it's efficient, wastes less energy and it's handy to have food ready made. One of the struggles I have with doing this kind of a program, is committing the time to preparing food. Again, it comes back to my mindful practice. I am mindful when I am preparing food, cooking it and eating it.

I've been vegetarian for about 6 years, though I have occaisionally eaten meat and fish...especially when I am walking the Camino in Spain. During this 21 Day Feel Good Fast, I am changing my habits and it feels really GOOD! Before every meal I stop to offer gratitude by saying grace and blessing my food.

On Saturday I'm going to the Farmer's Market in Orillia to buy from my favourite organic farm,  McBrides in Oro-Medonte.

I had to buy bagged carrots since I couldn't get them at a market but I plan to change that when I get to the market.

I made my own Spring Onion and Leek soup which was delicious. I used the leftovers the next day and it was even better.

Also the 5 Minute Curry was perfect with a little zuccini and tomato. I bought Malaysian Curry since I'd never tried it before but it had a nice bite to it.

After playing in the mud and snow in the forest, the day ended with a stunning sunset over the lake. I ate dinner by the water and spent some time meditating too. Each day I go outside and put my feet on the ground and sometimes in the freezing cold water. It discharges all the static electricity from my cell and laptop and makes me feel connected to the universe as one. Try it. Even if it is cold or hot. Think of it as being mindful about a sensation. It's not good or bad, it just is!

Feel Good/GREAT again Moira! Thank you! Only one more month until I leave with my group to walk 225kms on the Camino in Spain.

Feel Good Fast - Day 1 Living without Cafe con Leche

My Camino is a blog about the stories of walking the Camino de Santiago in Spain and it is also about my way back home which includes the journey back to my authentic self. I have been integrating the Camino experiences into my life for 11 years now and I want to share more of this journey with you in other ways, such as Mindfulness and Barefooting.

Today, I'm beginning a 21 Day Feel Good Fast. No I'm not starving myself, rather I am practicing mindfulness, with a dash of hands on healthy eating, living and being Barefoot!

In May she is offering not only 21 days of ideas about what to eat and what to delete from your diet, she's sharing her recipes! Last week I made the decision to give it a go. I'm doing a trial run for Moira to sort out any kinks and share my experience with you. Here we are in a short video having some fun after an interview. I Love Barefooting! It's I plan on  being more mindful about everything I put into my body. This I can't do alone cause I always cheat! My dear friend and chef Moira Nordholt, who has had one of the best organic vegan spots in Toronto for over 3 years called Feel Good Guru, is my guide.

Yesterday I went shopping at Fiesta Farms and especially the The Nut House to buy organic and fresh products. I cleaned out my fridge of anything that doesn't fit into this way of eating and now I'm ready to begin.

As a barefooter, I honour the value the Great Mother Earth has on our life, offering food, water, earth and the air we breath. It's been a mindfulness practice for the last 4 years . In May I'll be leading my 13th group on the Camino to walk 225 kilometers (mostly barefoot) and I'm also training for a 50 kilometer ultra run July 2 in Hector, New York (mostly barefoot too!).

Day 1

No cafe con leche.

I love my morning coffee organic, free trade and freshly ground. I prefer soy to milk but when I am in Spain on the Camino, I will have milk. How will I live without coffee?

"Try Teeccino," Moira says. I did and it's good. Not great, but good.

Before I made coffee it I went out for a 7am run in the snow! 45 minutes with some hill training. Had to wear minimalist shoes today as I have a split on the side of my foot and it really hurts if I step on anything. Tomorrow I will tape it up. I live on the lake and came home to this beautiful view of a very rough lake and snow falling.

Next I made a fresh green smoothie for breaky and enough for 2 days. Yummy.

I'll wait till some sun comes out to go for a barefoot walk.

Lunch is a salad and dinner is Fava beans and green veggies. I could live on legumes so this is easy for me.

I Feel Good already Moira!

Barefoot Kilimanjaro

Often people can't understand why I would choose to run or walk barefoot through the forest or in the snow and there isn't always a simple answer. Mostly it's because I like to be connected to the Great Mother Earth and I'm not afraid to expose my feet to the elements because I trust they are designed to take care of me. Even after reading studies and scientific evidence, in the end what is most important for me is that it makes sense. When I watched this documentary I could competely relate to their mission and I would attempt it myself if the chance was presented in my life. For them it was about defying common perception, slowing down and being aware of the environment. And those are the same reasons I like to experience much of my life in my bare feet.
